Best DJI Drones for Beginners in 2025

If you’re considering diving into the world of drones in 2024, DJI is likely one of the top names you’ve come across. With user-friendly models that offer excellent image quality, DJI has established itself as a leading choice in the consumer drone market. DJI doesn’t just produce compact, easy-to-use drones ideal for beginners; it also offers robust products designed for seasoned drone users. This guide will explore DJI drone models with high performance, ease of use, and suitability for beginners.

Why Choose a DJI Drone?

DJI is the world’s top commercial drone manufacturer, known for high-quality craftsmanship and aesthetics, top-notch performance, and outstanding image quality. As the creator of the Osmo line, DJI ensures that its drone cameras produce high-quality visuals with minimal need for post-editing.

Technologically, DJI leads the industry with constant updates and innovations, delivering a user-friendly experience for beginners and experts alike. DJI’s app, DJI Fly, provides a stable and regularly updated platform for easy drone connection and control.

Entering the world of drones can be challenging with questions like which model to choose, how to fly it, and where to fly. Luckily, DJI has a vast community of users worldwide. With drones now available for under $200, it has become much more affordable and accessible than in previous years.

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Drone

1. Purpose of Use

Business and hobbyist drone purpose

Each drone model has different capabilities. You can use a consumer drone for filming or agricultural surveys, but certain drones are designed specifically for particular purposes. In this guide, we focus on consumer drones for general use.

2. Battery Life and Flight Time

Battery affects flying experience

Battery life is crucial, as it directly affects flight and recording time. Most small consumer drones can fly continuously for 25–45 minutes, depending on the model. The DJI Mini 4, for example, has a battery life of up to 45 minutes in ideal conditions. Long-time drone enthusiasts often carry 2-4 batteries to extend filming sessions.

3. Camera Quality

Camera is extremely important when choosing drone

Often referred to as “flycams” in many countries, drones are valued for their cameras. High-quality visuals keep users enthusiastic about flying drones. DJI, also known for its cameras, offers models like the Osmo Action and Osmo Pocket, which can rival top photography brands. This manufacturer integrates these advanced technologies into its drones, making them an ideal choice if camera quality is a priority.

4. Price

The best drone may have the most advanced features, but the right drone is the one within your budget. Fortunately, in 2025, drones are more affordable than ever, with entry-level models available for around $200. Later in this post, we will list some affordable drone models for new users. So let’s move on to the next factor.

5. Size and Weight

DJI Mini 2 SE with 249 grams weight

For professional drone users, weight and size are probably not too important. The reason is that large and heavy drones often come with high performance, or at least are suitable for their main purpose. However, for beginners, a large and heavy drone will more or less cause obstacles in the process of getting used to it. A small, light, easy-to-transport drone will create the premise for you to be able to use the drone more, thereby improving your skills.

6. Control and App Support

DJI Fly interface

Most consumer drones offer two control methods: FPV (First-Person View) and remote controller. FPV provides a direct view through the drone’s camera, while the remote controller has a screen connected to the camera. Due to their complexity, I recommend avoiding FPV models for beginners.

Mastering a drone may take time, but it’s worth it when you see the footage. With these guidelines, you’ll be better equipped to choose the right drone for you. Next, here are a few beginner-friendly models highly rated by both us and the drone community.

Beginner-Friendly Drone Models

For new users, I think price, remote control options, and weight are key factors to consider. First, a high price can be a major barrier for beginners who have never used a drone before, so a more affordable price point makes it easier for newcomers to get started. Second, when it comes to controllers, I believe beginners should start with RC (Remote Control) instead of FPV (First-Person View), as FPV can be challenging to master, even for experienced users. Finally, regarding weight, a lightweight drone has multiple advantages: easier to transport and doesn’t require a registration permit (and in some countries, a drone over 250g weight must be registered to take flight).

Based on these criteria, here are some recommended drone models for beginners in 2024, as suggested by the DJI Fly Go 4 team.

DJI Neo

DJI Neo

The first candidate on this list is the DJI Neo.  This is a compact, affordable drone aimed at beginner and casual drone users, offering an impressive feature set for its low price point. Weighing just 135 grams, it is highly portable and designed to capture 4K stabilized video with up to 18 minutes of flight time per charge. This small drone lacks obstacle avoidance sensors but compensates with subject tracking and a durable build that can withstand minor collisions. Here are DJI Neo’s specs:

DJI Neo has awesome specs that fit new user

DJI Neo is like a combination of the Mini series and the Avata. Firstly, DJI Neo can be controlled using the RC-N3 and Goggles 3. This makes Neo an excellent choice for beginners, as it supports both traditional joystick controls and first-person view (FPV) control through the goggles. This setup provides users with more options and enhances the overall drone experience. Additionally, DJI Neo is compatible with the Motion Controller, allowing users to control the drone with hand gestures. The drawbacks of this model are its limited 18-minute battery life and the camera’s JPEG-only photo format support. However, with the price of just $200, it’s hard to find a better drone than the DJI Neo. Last but not least, if you want to read more about this special drone then we have a very detailed post right here about DJI Neo. Now, let’s go to the next drone.

DJI Mini 4K

DJI Mini 4K

DJI Mini is also a remarkable name on this list. Released at the end of August 2024, DJI Mini 4K possesses many outstanding and latest technologies from its famous manufacturer. Right from the name, the manufacturer wants to emphasize the two strengths of this small drone: “mini” and “4K”. The Mini 4K belongs to the Mini series, a drone line with light size and weight, suitable for beginners and amateurs. In addition, DJI Mini 4K also supports recording and shooting in 4K quality. Here are some parameters of the Mini 4K:

DJI Mini 4K can produce images and videos in 4K quality

Unlike DJI Neo, the Mini 4K doesn’t prioritize minimizing weight and propellers. Consequently, the Mini 4K is nearly twice as heavy as DJI Neo. However, this trade-off is justified by its significantly improved battery life, flight time, and maximum control range. Additionally, the DJI Mini 4K boasts a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor. While both the Neo and Mini 4K produce 12-megapixel images, the key difference lies in the Mini 4K’s ability to output RAW files, whereas DJI Neo is limited to JPEG. This is a substantial upgrade as RAW files offer superior image quality compared to JPEGs. With a price of $299, the Mini 4K is undeniably a great value for money when compared to other drones. We have an in-depth article analyzing DJI Mini 4K, so feel free to click through for more details. Now, let’s move on to the next drone

DJI Mini 2 SE

DJI Mini 2 SE

Coming in third on this list is the DJI Mini 2 SE. Although it was released in 2023, the Mini 2 SE is ranked alongside the Mini 4K on DJI’s website. It’s no coincidence that the DJI Mini 2 SE is placed in the same category as the Mini 4K, and here’s why:

Weight 246 g
Size
  • Folded (without propellers): 138×81×58 mm
  • Unfolded (with propellers): 245×289×56 mm
Battery 2250 mAh/ up to 31 mins

The specifications of the Mini SE are not too different from the Mini 2 SE, but the image quality is the notable point

The primary difference between the DJI Mini SE and Mini 2 SE lies in their maximum control range. The DJI Mini SE is limited to a 4km radius, a significant drawback. However, this may be acceptable for beginners who may not be comfortable handling a drone at greater distances. Additionally, the Mini SE does not support RAW image files, only JPEG, which can slightly impact image and video quality. Nevertheless, for basic use, JPEG is sufficient for most users. Due to its age, the DJI Mini SE is no longer sold on DJI’s website. The only place you can find it is on third-party marketplaces. As a result, used Mini SE can be found at very affordable prices compared to the other four drones mentioned. You might even find a well-conditioned DJI Mini SE for under $100 if you’re lucky.

DJI Mavic Mini

DJI Mavic Mini

Released in Q4 2019, the DJI Mavic Mini was the first DJI drone that didn’t require registration to fly in the United States. However, due to its launch date being relatively far from 2025, many of the Mavic Mini’s technologies have become outdated and have several shortcomings. The following are the technical specifications of the DJI Mavic Mini:

Weight 249 g

  • FHD:1920×1080 @ 24/25/30/48/50/60fps
Price No longer for sale but can still be found used

DJI Mavic Mini is quite old compared to the market but can still give you very good image quality

First, we should note that the maximum control distance is limited to 3km, which can be a significant constraint for advanced drone users. However, for beginners, this range may be acceptable. In terms of image and video quality, the DJI Mavic Mini is quite similar to the DJI Mini SE in terms of pixel density, photo resolution, and video resolution. The Mavic Mini’s current advantage lies in its proven stability over the years and its very affordable price. As it is no longer sold on DJI’s website, the Mavic Mini can only be found on e-commerce platforms as a used product. However, if you don’t need to fly very far and don’t have high demands for image quality, the Mavic Mini can fully meet your needs.

Conclusion

I believe that through the analysis and brief information above, you can completely choose a suitable drone for yourself. If you prioritize convenience, we would like to recommend DJI Neo. And if you are someone with higher requirements for image quality, DJI Mini 4K will be the perfect choice for you. Finally, we wish everyone the best experience when entering the world of drones. Don’t forget to support and try the DJI Fly Go 4 control application that we have developed based on DJI Mobile SDK!
